Pizzas are safe to eat during pregnancy as long as they are well cooked and piping hot. Mozzarella is perfectly safe, but be careful with pizzas made with soft, mold-ripened cheeses like Brie and Camembert, and soft blue cheeses like Danish Blue.

Pregnancy Safe (and Unsafe) Pizza Toppings

Pizza cheese in pregnancy

Pizza cheese is usually mozzarella, which is safe for pregnant women when made from pasteurized milk. Almost all commercially made mozzarella are made with pasteurized milk, including popular brands like Galbani, Kraft, and all supermarket own-label mozzarella brands. Other cheeses that are commonly found on pizzas may not be safe to use during pregnancy. These include:

  1.     Unpasteurized or soft cheese like brie
  2.     Ricotta (if made with unpasteurized milk)
  3.     Soft blue cheese like Gorgonzola
  4.     Soft goat cheese (chevre)


Soft, mold-ripened cheese carries the risk of listeria and should therefore be avoided by pregnant women. This also applies if they are placed on a pizza topping towards the end of the cooking process, i.e. only being warmed up. Warming the cheese does not remove the risk of listeria.

However, cooking the cheese on the pizza until it is very hot, rather than just warm, is safer to do in pregnancy, even if it is usually out of bounds.

For example, if you had a blue cheese and bacon pizza and both the cheese and bacon were heated to a high temperature (until both sizzled), it would be safe for pregnant women to consume.

Some people don't like these cheeses when heated this much (after all, they're not meant to be eaten this way), but heating the cheese kills any possible Listeria contamination.

Pizza toppings with processed or cured meat when you are pregnant

Particular caution should be exercised if you plan to eat a meat-topped pizza while pregnant. Deli, processed or cured, undercooked meat on a pizza can include:

  •     Hot peppers
  •     Prosciutto
  •     Pieces of ham
  •     Sausage or minced meat or pork
  •     Chorizo
  •     salami


If you are pregnant and want to eat a pepperoni pizza or other pizza with a similar meat topping, make sure that the meat topping is cooked to steaming hot (and not just heated).

This is usually the case when the pizza is freshly made - you can see the pepperoni or salami bubbling and getting crispy around the edges. When heated to this temperature, the risk of listeria contamination is vastly reduced and the pepperoni pizza is safe to eat, even when pregnant.
